Hype regarding the iPhone 17 series has been in the air for quite some time. Even though the official release of the Apple next-generation flagship is yet months away to be released in September rumors and speculations are already drawing the picture of what’s new in the upcoming devices. From a new and capable chipset to a new camera sensor upgrade and a new iPhone 17 Air variant, the iPhone 17 lineup is said to offer plenty of upgrades. Perhaps one of the greatest shifts comes in the shape of the high-end iPhone 17 Pro devices.

Based on rumors and leaks from analysts, insiders, and supply chain sources, the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Maxor potentially “Ultra”are the high-end devices in the lineup and are rumored to get major upgrades. From a new camera system design to performance enhancements and new materials, here’s all we know so far about the iPhone 17 Pro.

iPhone 17 Pro to have a daring new design

One of the most discussed innovations in the iPhone 17 Pro lineup is the design. Apple is said to be abandoning the titanium frame unveiled in the iPhone 15 Pro and reverting to an aluminium frame for the iPhone 17 Pro devices. The change is said to comply with Apple’s 2030 environmental objectives.

At the rear, the iPhone 17 Pro is said to come with a “part glass, part aluminium” build, where the upper portion is made of aluminium for enhanced strength and the lower portion continues to have glass to facilitate wireless charging.

The other significant design overhaul is to be seen on the camera bump. Replacing the square camera module of previous Pro series models, the iPhone 17 Pro might adopt a horizontally aligned rectangular or elongated oval-shaped camera bump. The three 48-megapixel cameras, as per reports, will be triangularly placed, while the flash and LiDAR sensor will be moved to the right side.

iPhone 17 Pro anticipated display upgrades

The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max on the front are predicted to keep their 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch display screens, respectively, as per a recent leak by analyst Jeff Pu. But the front glass is said to be scratch-proof and tougher than the existing Ceramic Shield. There is also speculated a new “super-hard” anti-reflective layer that could make the display even tougher.

Apple also reportedly makes some tweaks to the Dynamic Island, which was added with the iPhone 14 Pro. Rumors indicate that the Pro Max model may have a smaller Dynamic Island. The adjustment may be a result of a “metal meta-lens” that accommodates the TrueDepth camera pieces more effectively.

iPhone 17 Pro camera enhancements

The camera setup should be one of the highlights of the iPhone 17 Pro. Apple is planning to make iPhone 17 Pro phones the go-to camera phones for video, so much that it sees people using iPhones as their primary device for content creation and videography, as reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

There are rumors that all three rear camerasWide, Ultra Wide, and Telephotowill have 48-megapixel sensors. This would be a major jump for the Telephoto lens, which has a 12-megapixel sensor currently.

Another thrilling prospect is the addition of a mechanical aperture to the Wide camera. This capability, which exists in professional cameras, would enable users to open or close the aperture, allowing for greater control over depth of field and illumination, making the iPhone 17 Pro more proficient, just like professional cameras.

The TrueDepth camera on the front is also said to be getting a big boost, moving from 12-megapixel to 24-megapixel. This upgrade would improve selfie quality and permit more detailed cropping.

Performance with A19 Pro chip and vapour chamber cooling
Under the hood, the iPhone 17 Pro variants are said to come equipped with Apple’s latest A19 Pro chip, based on TSMC’s cutting-edge 3nm (N3P) process. The new chip is expected to bring considerable enhancements in performance and power efficiency over the A18 Pro chip of the iPhone 16 Pro models.

In addition, both Pro variants are speculated to have 12GB of RAM, higher than the 8GB available in the iPhone 16 Pro lineup. Such an increase in memory would facilitate smoother multitasking and improved performance in resource-demanding applications.

To address the heat produced by the highly powered A19 Pro chip, Apple could add a vapour chamber cooling system in the Pro Max variant. This gaming notebook common technology exploits the use of liquid for better heat dispersion, avoiding thermal throttling and ensuring smooth performance under heavy loads.

iPhone 17 Pro battery and charging improvements

The iPhone 17 Pro will be marginally thicker than the previous model, measuring 8.725mm as opposed to 8.25mm. This thickness increase may allow for a bigger battery, which could enhance battery life.

Apple is also said to be testing a 7.5W reverse wireless charging feature, enabling the iPhone to charge other products such as AirPods and the Apple Watch. Although current iPhones have 4.5W reverse charging via USB-C, this feature would charge wireless faster and more convenient.

Wired charging speed is said to remain at 35W like with the iPhone 16 series.

iPhone 17 Pro connectivity upgrades

The iPhone 17 Pro devices are anticipated to feature Wi-Fi 7, which provides faster speeds and reduced latency. Apple is also said to be working on a custom Wi-Fi chip, which might enhance energy efficiency and open the door for an eventual all-in-one system-on-chip (SoC).

Bluetooth 5.3 will also likely be supported, enhancing connectivity and energy efficiency even further.

iPhone 17 Ultra taking the place of the iPhone 17 Pro Max?

The iPhone 17 lineup is very likely to launch a new iPhone 17 Air in place of the iPhone Plus model. But that is not the only rebranding Apple will undertake.

iPhone 17 Pro

The largest model in the series is reportedly going to be renamed the “iPhone 17 Ultra” rather than “Pro Max” by Apple, according to fresh reports. Although this rumour has emerged in the past cycles, it is still speculative in nature. If a reality, the Ultra model would encompass unique upgrades like the vapour chamber cooling system, thus becoming the top-of-the-line device in the series.

iPhone 17 series launch timeline

The iPhone 17 Pro lineup will likely launch in September 2025, coinciding with the regular iPhone 17 and rumoured iPhone 17 Air. Keep in mind, though, that these rumours and leaks, and Apple might have a different final product.
