The iPhone 17 Pro will reportedly have a new aluminium frame, a bigger camera island, and the high-end A19 Pro chip. Apple may also unveil a thinner iPhone 17 Air in its 2025 iPhone series.

In Brief

Apple could substitute the titanium frame with an aluminium-glass construction for iPhone 17 Pro

iPhone 17 Pro is also said to have a broader camera island

It may be powered by Apple’s latest A19 Pro chipset

Hype for Apple’s next flagship is on. Although there are a couple of months before the official release, and the iPhone 16 series is still new and among the best sellers, tech experts and Apple enthusiasts already have their bets on what will be new in the iPhone 17 series. The iPhone 17 Pro is particularly anticipated to get major design overhauls, performance enhancements, and camera upgrades.

From a rumored aluminium frame to a huge camera island and the mighty A19 Pro chip, here is all that rumor indicates for Apple’s 2025 flagship.

Dumping the titanium frame

At the 2023 iPhone release, Apple launched the first titanium-bodied iPhones in the form of the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max models. The new material was said to provide users with more durability and a lighter design. Apple is now, however, said to be planning to revert to aluminium frames.

Reports by industry experts like Jeff Pu and Ming-Chi Kuo indicate that Apple is going to produce the iPhone 17 Pro using a part-aluminium, part-glass construction to replace the all-glass back design used in latest models. The move from an all-glass backing is claimed to be a move towards Apple’s carbon neutrality aspirations for 2030 since aluminium has less of a carbon footprint compared to titanium.

The iPhone 17 Pro is also expected to have a dual-tone finish, with a darker island for the cameras in contrast to the remainder of the body. The camera island will reportedly also be bigger compared to the previous model.

Thicker body to accommodate a larger battery

The other significant expectation from the iPhone 17 Pro is a minor boost in the thickness of the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Based on a leak by leaker Ice Universe, the iPhone 17 Pro Max may be 8.725mm thick, as opposed to the 8.25mm thickness of the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Although this is a small difference, it would enable Apple to fit a bigger battery into the phone.

Big camera island

The iPhone 17 Pro is also rumored to get a major revamp of its camera setup. Apple tipster Jon Prosser reports that the phone might have a big camera island across the phone’s width. Three cameras would be placed on the left side, while the right side would be occupied by an LED flash, LiDAR scanner, and microphone.

Moreover, as per Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is set to enhance the lenses so that the iPhone 17 Pro can shoot professional-grade photos and videos. Apple, according to Gurman, wants the iPhone 17 Pro to be so powerful at video recording that it would be able to allow videographers and creators to make a switch from professional cameras to the iPhone 17 Pro for high-quality videos without having to use big camera rigs.

iPhone 17 Pro

There are reports that the Pro model will have a 48-megapixel telephoto camera, which is a huge jump from the existing 12-megapixel sensor. The four iPhone 17 models may also include a new 24-megapixel front camera for crisper and more detailed selfies.

A19 Pro chip and 12GB RAM power

Under the hood, the iPhone 17 Pro will have Apple’s new and most advanced chipset for smartphones. The phone will be driven by Apple’s new A19 Pro chip based on TSMC’s new 3nm process. This chipset will bring fast performance and enhanced power efficiency, providing seamless multitasking, quicker app launches, and enhanced gaming performance.

iPhone 17 Pro

Another significant upgrade expected to be included is 12GB of RAM, a huge leap from the 8GB used in the latest Pro offerings. The added memory would still enable the iPhone 17 Pro to support more resource-intensive apps and workflows with ease.

Connectivity: Apple to drop Qualcomm?

Apple has been working on reducing its reliance on Qualcomm by developing its in-house cellular modems. The latest iPhone 16e arrived featuring Apple’s proprietary C1 modem. However, this modem currently lacks mmWave support, limiting its 5G connectivity to sub-6GHz bands.

Apple is reportedly already developing an enhanced version of the C1 modem, which would support mmWave and have better power efficiency and transmission rates. The enhanced modem may, however, not be available for the iPhone 17 Pro series. Apple may, therefore, still use Qualcomm modems in its 2025 flagship for the purpose of reliable 5G connectivity.

iPhone 17 series launch date and price

The iPhone 17 series should arrive in September if Apple adheres to its Fall launch cycle.

In terms of pricing, Apple has maintained launch prices unchanged in recent years, even with new upgrades. Therefore, the iPhone 17 should cost Rs 79,000, and the iPhone 17 Pro should be launched at Rs 1,20,000.

In the lineup, Apple is also said to retire the iPhone 17 Plus and replace it with a new iPhone 17 Air, which is said to have a thinner design. The prices of the iPhone 17 Air are not yet certain, but if it is replacing the iPhone Plus, it will likely be priced in the region of Rs 89,900, which is the same as the entry-level version of the iPhone 16 Plus.
