Apple has finally unveiled the full Apple iPhone 16 collection after several months of anticipation.
The Apple iPhone 16 collection is divided into four models, the iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max, similar to recent iPhone iterations, though there aren’t as many differences between the models as you might anticipate.
For example, the new A18 chipset, Action button, and even the new Camera Controls button, along with improved battery life and support for Apple Intelligence, make the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus very alluring substitutes for the higher-end models.

Apple iPhone 16: Release date and pricing
Today, September 9, 2024, saw Apple unveil the much awaited iPhone 16 collection. Pre-orders for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus opened right after the presentation, and the phones are scheduled to ship on September 20, 2024.
Fortunately, there is no price increase in the US or the UK for the iPhone 16 or iPhone 16 Plus; they still start at £799/$799 and £799/$899, respectively, just like their predecessors.
Apple iPhone 16: Design and screen
On the surface, at least, not much has changed in terms of the overall design of the Apple iPhone 16.
Although the displays on the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are the same at 6.1 and 6.7 inches, respectively, there are a few hardware updates in this year’s flagship lineup.
The addition of the Action button, which was previously only available on the iPhone 15 Pro collection and lets you access a variety of features and shortcuts with a single button press, should be the most obvious change right away.
Additionally, there is the brand-new Camera Control button, which is essentially an additional button on the iPhone 16’s side that offers even more precise control over the camera experience. You can swipe to zoom in and out, change the photo and video modes, and do a lot more without actually touching the screen, in addition to taking pictures and videos with the new button.
Speaking of cameras, those with keener eyes than me may have noticed that the standard Apple iPhone 16 models now have a new vertical camera arrangement. This reminds me a lot of the iPhone X’s design, though Apple says that improving spatial video and spatial photo capture was the primary motivation for the redesign in order to provide users of the (very expensive, extremely specialized) Apple Vision Pro with a more immersive playback experience.
The Apple iPhone 16 otherwise operates essentially as normal: it has an aluminum body, a USB-C port for charging, and MagSafe functionality. This time, however, it comes in some vibrant colors: Ultramarine, Black, White, Pink, and Teal.
Apple iPhone 16: Cameras
The term “Fusion nature” basically describes the camera’s capacity to provide optically excellent 1x and 2x images from the same sensor; however, it’s important to note that 2x images will only be recorded at 12MP, not the full 48MP resolution. Nevertheless, it basically makes it possible for you to frame your shots more easily and approach your subject closer without having to move.
Additionally, the lens is faster than before, and Apple claims that when paired with the A18 chipset, it should enable instantaneous photo capture with no shutter lag.
With the same 12MP sensor that Apple has been using for a while, there isn’t much of an improvement in terms of selfie camera performance; like earlier entries, it caps out at 4K@60 frames per second.
Apple iPhone 16: Performance and software
Over the last few years, Apple has divided the chipset offering across the various iPhone models; the Pro models receive the newest and most advanced processing technology, while the regular models get chipsets that are a year old.
With the release of the Apple iPhone 16, that has changed, though, as Apple is now using the same A18 chipset throughout the whole lineup. The Pro models have a Pro version that offers a marginally better CPU and GPU performance than the A16 Bionic and A17 Pro of the previous year’s lineup.
Crucially, according to Apple, the CPU is 30% faster than the A16 Bionic, and the 5-core GPU boosts performance by 40%. As a result, AAA desktop games like Resident Evil Village, which were previously limited to the iPhone 15 Pro collection, can now be played on the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus.
With iOS 18, the phones come pre-installed with Apple Intelligence, which includes a significantly enhanced Siri and new AI features like Genmoji. However, these features are only available if you set your language to US English.
While support for Spanish and other languages is expected to roll out at some point in the upcoming year, Apple states that UK English and other English dialects will be available later this year. It’s also important to keep in mind that not every Apple Intelligence feature will be accessible at launch; instead, they will be released gradually over the next few months.
Additionally, Apple says that the Apple iPhone 16 and Apple iPhone 16 Plus have longer battery lives. However, the company didn’t provide any specifics, and as usual, USB-C charging is supported.
